- il resto dell'anno - one year's remainder
- "One year's remainder" is a documentary film set in Salina, in the Aeolian archipelago north of Sicily. An island, known mostly in the summer, that reveals itself after the departure of the tourists, during the months in which a thousand people deal with the slow passage of time. "One year's remainder" has the island as point of view, through the sights and sounds of its places and its inhabitants, witnesses of passage. Below the peaks of its two volcanoes, there are the lives of the secondary characters, chosen for their close, physical relationship with the island itself: it\'s crossed by a fisherman and his family, by the driver of a school bus service. It is carefully cultivated by a man from northern Italy and a seasonal farmer who has to deal with the tourism crisis. The community is represented in its relationship with space and time, never with the private . The island shows itself now and in the past: the identity of a place where different cultures have always crossed and continue to do so, where the stories pass leaving little signs, ruins and generations. From the hundreds of tourists in summer, up to the solitude of winter with a strong sense of isolation, waiting for the spring. A simple storytelling, no interviews, no narrating voice but the power of its images with the natural light that changes day by day. "One year's remainder" has a structure based on the natural flow of time, starting with a prologue set in the summer. The small metamorphoses (in the place and people) during the autumn and winter months, leads to a natural ending, the following spring The narrative proceeds following events linked together naturally (natural elements are inevitably always present) or based on the vicissitudes of recurring characters. There are 4 narrative levels: the changing of the island during the seasons. the social insight, through the ages (represented by migrations, by the approach to the sense of isolation and by the old and new morals). periodic events in the community throughout the year. the daily lives of recurring characters. The aesthetic and emotional richness of the place are the primary value of the film: Salina is a unique island, not randomly a Unesco world heritage site. And unique wants to be the care in the visual and acoustic realisation, aiming to quickly immerse the viewer in the story, literally overwhelmed by as much sensory stimulation as possible, with a rhythm that varies according to the narrative context: over fifty sequences, places and faces constantly evolving, a use of heterogeneous focal length lenses, audio environment built on a \"self-sufficient\" sound narrative and a minimalist musical soundtrack, commented mainly by vocalizations. The camera tries to become one with the island, entering into the bushes, between rocks,in stone walls along its roads, always subordinate to the object of narration. It is interesting to see how its people, once familiar with the instrument, spontaneously show themselves looking into the camera, into a direct relationship with the lens and the public, trascending our filter. "One year's remainder" shows the reality of a simple world within a few miles from the "Continent", narrating the small, constant surprises: the fortuitous meeting between fishermen off the coast, a fire, the unexpected arrival on a day in spring. That is what remains after the last tourist has left.
