Appeal from people involved in Iranian cinema

28.01.2010

An appeal from people involved in the Iranian cinema industry has reached us at the EDN office. We are publishing the letter in its full length.

Picture from the protests happening in Iran

To the filmmakers of the world

We, people involved in the Iranian cinema, whom due to increased political pressures are not able to sign this letter, would greatly appreciate the boycotting of  this year’s Fajr Film Festival  (Jan 25- Feb 4) by all invitees.

The Fajr Film Festival held by the regime is taking place this year in a context of growing violence toward the Iranian people in general and the artists in particular.  Some of the Iranian film artists have been imprisoned, some banned from traveling, some forced to exile and some threatened in different ways. Hence, in order to express their disapproval, many involved in the Iranian Cinema decided to boycott this edition of the Festival. Against their wish, some of these filmmakers have been forced to participate.

As you may be aware, many journalists and representative of foreign Medias have been expelled from Iran, extreme censorship is being enforced in order to prevent the world from hearing the voice of the opposition. On the other hand, the usual date of the festival has been changed by the organizers to avoid media coverage of the demonstrations during the commemoration of the revolution.

Dear colleagues,

Although, we look forward to extending our hospitality to you in our country, we must regretfully declare that acceptance of the invitation of the Iranian regime and your participation in Fajr Film Festival would be considered as an act of support and approval of the government whose people are still mourning the victims of the recent violence and desperately awaiting to hear from their imprisoned or missing loved ones. Your presence in this year‘s Fajr Festival, would be considered as ignoring the struggle of the Iranian people for freedom and democracy.

We, people involved in the Iranian cinema, definitely look forward to welcoming you in a Festival approved by the Iranian people.

With highest respect and greetings
